While most of Northern Europe puts the clubs away for the winter, the Costa del Sol keeps playing. For many golfers, this is the best part of the year to be here.
If you are thinking about a winter trip to Marbella, here is an honest picture of what the season is like on the golf course.
The weather
Winter in Marbella is mild. Most days are sunny, with comfortable temperatures in the middle of the day. Mornings and evenings are cooler, so a light jumper or windproof layer is useful.
It does rain, mostly between November and January, but rainy days usually come in short spells rather than whole weeks. It is rare to lose more than a day or two to the weather.
The main difference from summer is the light. Days are shorter, and it gets dark around six in the evening in December. Plan lessons and rounds in the morning or early afternoon.
Why winter is good for golf
In summer, the heat makes the middle of the day hard work, and the best tee times go early. In winter, you can play comfortably from mid-morning to late afternoon.
Course conditions are often very good at this time of year. Greens have recovered from the summer, and the grass is green after the first autumn rains.
December and January are generally quieter on the courses. If you prefer a calmer round, or more flexibility with your lesson times, these months are a good choice. February and March get busier again as spring visitors arrive.
A good time to learn
Winter is also one of the best times to start golf or to work on your game. No heat, no rush, and the body feels fresh for longer sessions.
Many of our winter clients combine golf with a longer stay: residents who spend part of the season in Marbella, families during the Christmas holidays, and couples who come for a week of sun. A short intensive programme fits easily into this kind of trip. Here is how much golf you can learn in 3 days.
If you plan to play on courses during your stay, check whether they ask for a handicap before you arrive. We explain it here: do you need a handicap to play golf in Marbella?
