It is one of the first questions we get from visitors: “We’d love to play a round while we’re here, but we don’t have a handicap. Is that a problem?”
The short answer: sometimes yes, sometimes no. It depends on the course, the day and how you play. Here is what you need to know before you book.
Why some courses ask for a handicap
A handicap is not a test of talent. For a golf course, it is simply a way to know that you understand the basics: how to move around the course, how fast to play and how to look after the greens.
The Costa del Sol has dozens of courses, and in high season their tee sheets are full. A group that takes six hours to play 18 holes slows down everyone behind them. That is why many courses ask for a handicap certificate, or a valid federation licence, when you book or check in.
Requirements vary. Some courses ask for a maximum handicap. Some only ask during busy periods. Others accept any player who can show a reasonable level. The only reliable way to know is to ask the course directly when you book.
What if you have never played before?
If you are a complete beginner, a full 18-hole round is not where you want to start anyway. You would spend most of the time looking for balls, and it would not be much fun.
There are better first steps:
- Start on the driving range. One or two lessons are enough to learn the grip, the setup and how to make contact with the ball.
- Practise the short game. Chipping and putting are where beginners improve fastest, and where most of the score is made.
- Play a few holes with a coach. A playing lesson lets you walk the course with a professional, learn the etiquette and play at your own pace, without worrying about the group behind you.
Many of our clients start exactly this way, and some of them are playing holes on a real course by the end of a short programme. Here is how much golf you can learn in 3 days.
Handicap and licence: what is the difference?
In Spain, the two usually go together.
The federation licence is your membership of the Spanish Golf Federation (RFEG). It includes third-party liability insurance and is recognised worldwide.
The handicap is the number that shows your playing level. It is linked to your licence, and it is updated as you play.
If you already have a licence and handicap from your home country, bring proof of it. Most Spanish courses accept handicaps from other federations.
If you don’t have one yet, you can get your Spanish licence here on the Costa del Sol. It takes a structured course with a qualified professional, a practical and theory test, and the federation registration. We explain every step in our guide on how to get your golf licence in Spain.
Is it worth getting a licence on holiday?
If you are only here for a weekend and want to try golf for the first time, probably not. A few lessons will give you more.
If you come to the Costa del Sol every year, spend part of the winter here, or plan to play at home too, it is worth it. Once you have a licence and a handicap, you can book rounds on almost any course in Spain and abroad, without having to explain your level every time.
